The freak snowstorm that swept the Northeast last weekend left many families without electricity at a particularly inconvenient time — just as early applications were due.

An untold number of high school students across the region were forced to scramble to submit their application materials by Nov. 1, the deadline at dozens of well-known colleges, camping out in coffee shops and other homes in search of working outlets and wireless Internet.

Victoria Ngo of Hackensack, N.J., was among them. Ms. Ngo was hoping to apply early admission to Villanova University, but she was unable to access her personal statement, which was not yet complete and which was stored on her laptop, its battery power depleted.

“I actually had a nervous breakdown,” she said. Days before her deadline, Ms. Ngo had panicked thoughts of writing her essay longhand by candlelight; she wound up heading to her cousin’s house in New Milford, which had electricity.

As it was, Villanova (维拉诺瓦大学(Villanova University),是位于美国宾夕法尼亚州费城西北郊 Radnor 镇的一所私立大学)wound up extending its early action deadline to Nov. 4, and it was in good company. Boston College, Boston University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College and the University of Vermont were among at least 76 colleges and universities that pushed back their Nov. 1 deadlines, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling. The average extension was three days.

Even some schools outside of the region sympathetically extended their due dates, including the University of Chicago and Pomona College in California.

The board of directors of the Common Application issued a statement on Monday encouraging participating schools to “be sensitive to the adverse conditions affecting schools and students in the northeast.”

But postponed deadlines have not necessarily lessened student stress, as tens of thousands of homes from New Jersey to Massachusetts remain without electricity.

Some students took to Twitter this week to vent. “Still w/o power,” @wowfunhappy wrote on Tuesday. “I’m trying to use Dad’s laptop to work on my college app at Starbucks. I hate this laptop. Why won’t copy & paste work?”

“My last college app needs to be in,” wrote @ashhleystephens. “If the power doesn’t come back I’ll cry.”

For other students, the Northeaster reinforced the value of their early preparation. Judy Fairfull, head guidance counselor at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, Mass., said that while the storm resulted in several snow days this week, the students she advises were not affected.

“We submitted our applications early, about a week back,” she said. “We learned our lesson from the ice storm three years ago: Don’t wait until the last minute.”
